•The study of science, social, current and historical events are addressed using unit studies. Students investigate and explore in depth through unit studies of people, physical, earth, and life science. These studies promote "hands-on" learning with authentic investigations. Unit Study instruction frequently takes the theme approach and is often highly integrated throughout the curriculum. •The purpose of the Social Studies curriculum component is to foster in students, an appreciation of the dynamics of cultures both similar to and vastly different from their own, to assure geographic literacy, and to empower students with the intellectual - tools to approach the study of cultures, areas, and eras. •The purpose of the Science curriculum component is scientific literacy. Students' thinking advances from the concrete to the abstract as they accumulate experiences and ideas. Scientific content is introduced through firsthand experiences--with magnets, gears, butterflies, and a wide range of other living and non-living materials. In the course of their classroom investigations, students engage in observation, measurement, interpretation, prediction, and other processes essential for the development of scientific literacy. |
